This Hall of Famer plays the defense of the former Colts quarterback.
After Andrew Luck, 29, provoked a stir by retiring abruptly from the NFL on Saturday because of his numerous injuries, radio host Doug Gottlieb fanned the flames by tweeting: "Getting started retirement is too difficult "Gottlieb was immediately told how bad the decision was made by all current and former NFL players on social media.
"It's total stupidity, Doug. What allows you to decide how a person should live his life? So, are you now the authority on what motivates Andrew Luck? And if his decisions do not fit with what you think is best for him, then you tear him up? Guess who keeps you employed on FS1. Pleasant."
He has been criticized by two-time Super Bowl quarterback Troy Aikman, who is now commenting on the colors of the NFL's top television team for Fox.
Luck has been very successful so far in his football career, but he has also had a series of serious injuries that have forced him to miss 26 matches since 2015. This includes of: torn cartilage with two ribs; a partially torn abdomen; a lacerated kidney that allowed him to urinate blood; at least one concussion; a torn labrum; and a calf injury that led to his retirement.
At his retirement press conference, Luck said the injuries he suffered had "won my joy of the game."
Fox Sports radio host Gottlieb played college basketball for Notre Dame before working on television and radio.
Many other NFL players have joined Aikman on Twitter to wish Luck good luck.
Luck enjoyed a positive reputation with the NFL for his sportsmanship, even when he was hit.
There is a precedent for players who retire early due to injury issues. NFL stars Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson and Jim Brown also retired at age 30, but all three of them played in positions with a higher risk of injury than the quarterback. Luck was one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL, a position that typically sees star players play in their thirties.
