Trump and First Lady’s ballots returned to Florida

Although the Palm Beach County Election Supervisor’s website does not yet list Trump’s ballot as returned and counted, the official said the ballots were returned on Monday.

Under Florida law, voters are permitted to sign an affidavit allowing someone else to take and deposit their ballots.

The Trumps signed affidavits and their ballots were collected last week. This was after the deadline to request a mail-in ballot, but the rules allow voters to pick up the ballots in person after the deadline – or send approved delegates to pick them up.

As they did in March, when they voted in the Florida presidential primary, Trump and the first lady named Florida Republican Party member Alejando Garcia as responsible for their ballots in the signed affidavits.

The president has repeatedly criticized universal postal voting as being rife with fraud, although no evidence exists to support his claim. Although rare cases of mail-order fraud do occur, this problem is far from widespread in the US electoral system.
A recent example of mail-order fraud took place in the 2018 midterm election in a race where a GOP activist in North Carolina was charged with multiple crimes in connection with questionable mail-ballot activity in a race to Congress on behalf of the Republican candidate.

Mail-order fraud is extremely rare in part because states have systems and processes in place to prevent forgery, theft, and voter fraud. These systems would apply to both mail-in ballots and mail-in ballots for state voters.

Moreover, the president’s distinction between postal voting and postal voting has confused experts, who say these voting systems are essentially the same.

And Trump, along with many of his aides, has used postal voting or postal voting in the past.

Trump could have voted early in person in the March primaries, and early polls were open in Palm Beach as he toured his Mar-a-Lago complex.

But despite walking past an open early polling place at least six times on his way to his golf course, Trump opted instead to use the mail ballot picked up and dropped off by a delegate.
