Trump and Macron, a "tree of friendship" would be dead

The tree offered by French President Emmanuel Macron to US President Donald Trump is dead, the French press reported Monday.

Trump and Macron planted the young oak tree on the White House lawn during Macron's official visit to the United States in April 2018, but he disappeared shortly thereafter. The French ambassador to the United States, Gerard Araud, had tweeted at the time that the girl had been quarantined to comply with US customs regulations and would be replanted at a later date.

However, the French news agency AFP reported Monday that the tree had died in quarantine, citing a French diplomatic source.

The tree came from Belleau Wood, where more than 2,000 US Navy soldiers died and more than 7,000 were injured, during a battle that took place in June 1918 during of the First World War.

The Embassy of France in Washington did not immediately respond to CNBC's request.
