President Donald Trump denounced Saturday the American law on asylum as a "scam" and hinted that the wave of Central American families seeking asylum in the United States was in fact a dangerous member of a gang.
"The asylum program is a scam," Trump said. "Some of the most difficult people you've ever seen, people who seem to have to fight for the UFC."
Trump made these comments during a speech to the Jewish Republican Coalition in Las Vegas, Nevada. His remarks were made in the midst of a recrudescence of asylum seekers who submerged the customs and border protection service and fueled the cries of an "emergency" on the southern border.
Despite Trump's brutal characterization of migrants, CBP data show that the majority of those crossing the US-Mexico border are families, including women and children.
Trump accused lawyers of training migrants on what to say at the US-Mexico border to ask for asylum. At one point in his speech, he even mimicked a migrant reading a script.

Trump then imitated the immigration advocates who pushed the United States to adopt broader policies to allow asylum seekers to enter the country.
