House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to nominate five House Republicans to sit on a special committee to investigate the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol , according to Politico, end speculation about the participation of Capitol Hill’s most Trumpi faction in a panel that almost everyone opposes as a way to tarnish the former president’s reputation.

McCarthy’s selection to lead the GOP side of the panel is Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), a rising star in the ranks and a staunch Trump booster. He will be joined by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), one of Trump’s most prominent supporters in Congress, Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), a more center-right Republican who sits on the committee that oversees operations of Congress and Representatives Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) and Troy Nehls (R-TX).

President Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) proposed to create the committee in June after Senate Republicans blocked a bill passed by the House creating an independent commission to investigate on January 6. She appointed eight panelists, including a Republican, Representative Liz. Cheney (R-WY). The commission has its first hearing scheduled for July 27.
