Maybe Sidney Powell has gone too far even for Rudy Giuliani this time around.
The Trump campaign legal team has distanced itself from Fire Mark’s conservative lawyer after a tumultuous few days in which Powell made several incorrect statements about the electoral voting process, complex uncoiled conspiracy theories and vowed to “blow up” Georgia with a “biblical” trial.
“Sidney Powell practices law alone. She is not a member of Trump’s legal team. Neither is she the president’s lawyer in her personal capacity, ”Giuliani and fellow Trump attorney Jenna Ellis said in a statement on Sunday.
Trump himself announced Powell’s involvement, tweeting last week that she was part of a team of “wonderful lawyers and representatives” led by Giuliani.
There was no immediate campaign clarification and Powell did not immediately return an email requesting comment.
The statement alludes to chaos in a legal team that have lost case after case in their efforts to overturn the November 3 election results. Law firms have gone out of business, and in the latest setback Matthew Brann, a Republican judge in a U.S. district court in Pennsylvania, rejected the Trump campaign’s demand to deprive nearly 7 million voters .
“This claim, like Frankenstein’s monster, was randomly assembled from two separate theories in an attempt to avoid controlling a precedent,” he wrote in damning order, released on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon, the Trump campaign appealed Brann’s decision in Pennsylvania.
It came after similar failed legal offers in Georgia, Michigan and Arizona to prevent states from certifying their vote totals.
The statement on Powell was the latest sign of mistrust of his approach, even within some conservative circles. Fox News host Tucker Carlson said on his show last week that his team asked Powell for evidence to support his claims, but Powell failed to provide any.
Powell grabbed the headlines with her statements at a press conference Thursday where, joined by Giuliani and Ellis, she mistakenly suggested that a server hosting evidence of voting irregularities was located in Germany, that the Voting software used by Georgia and other states was created under the leadership of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the votes for Trump were likely reversed in favor of Biden.
However, his contributions that day were largely overshadowed by Giuliani’s hair dye malfunction.
In a later interview with Newsmax on Saturday, she appeared to accuse Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and his Republican Secretary of State of being part of a plot involving the awarding of a voting system contract which, according to she hurt Trump’s re-election bid.
“Georgia is probably going to be the first state I am going to blow up and Mr Kemp and the secretary of state have to go,” she said, later adding that a lawsuit she planned to file against the state would be “biblical”.
The status of that trial was unclear on Sunday night.
Powell, a former federal prosecutor, took over last year as senior counsel for Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Russia.
Since then, a federal judge has dismissed his allegations of prosecution misconduct and questioned some of his arguments, including his suggestion in a hearing several weeks ago that his conversations with Trump on the case Flynn were privileged.
She supported a Department of Justice motion to dismiss the lawsuits, a request that remains pending before U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan.
