On July 31, a pandemic relief package for tenants and landlords adopted under President Trump will end – and the Biden administration does not appear interested in renewing them.
A federal deportation ban ends on July 31 after an extension last month. The same goes for a moratorium on foreclosures. But the Biden administration has rolled out a new measure that allows homeowners to refinance their mortgages and lower their monthly payments in a bid to help 1.8 million Americans still on hold.
Still, some groups are pushing the White House to take more aggressive action to prevent people from losing their homes.
Regarding evictions, advocates say the end of the emergency measure threatens 6 million tenants who risk losing their homes at a time of new infections on the rise and that a federal program to help them has been very slow to deliver rent relief.
“The CDC’s eviction moratorium is a necessary public health measure to reduce the spread / deaths from COVID-19,” Diane Yentel, chair of the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, recently wrote on Twitter. “The need remains clear as Delta grows and 6 million tenant households fall behind on rent and face eviction when the moratorium expires.”
Paul Williams, a member of the Jain Family Institute, predicted that 80% of all households struggling with rental debt are in counties experiencing a wave of virus cases due to the Delta variant.
“Letting county courts kick people out next week is probably the worst Delta variant strategy I can think of,” he wrote on Twitter.
About 11.4 million tenants – or 16% in total – have fallen behind on rent payments, census analysis shows Center of the Left data on budgetary and political priorities. Around 3 million people have said they could be deported in just two months. Some courts ruled the ban unconstitutional earlier this year, Insider’s Ayelet Sheffey reported.
Separately, the Biden administration allows homeowners to extend the term of their mortgage. The White House said on Friday that homeowners with mortgages guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can still delay payments until September 30.
