Trump "exercises powers that do not really belong to him"

Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens said he was concerned about President Trump's refusal to comply with subpoenas before the House.

"I think there are things that should worry us, there is no doubt about it," said the 99-year-old Wall Street Journal player.

"The president exercises powers that do not really belong to him. I mean, he has to comply with subpoenas and things like that, "he said.

The clash between the Trump administration and the Democrat-controlled House has intensified in recent weeks after the White House ordered former White House lawyer Don McGahn , and to the former director of personnel security not to comply with the subpoenas.

The Judiciary Committee of the House voted Wednesday to declare Attorney General William Barr guilty of contempt of Congress after Trump claimed the executive's privilege over special advocate Robert Mueller's report and evidence under -jacentes.

If the dispute ended in the Supreme Court, Stevens said that it was obvious that the judges should rule in favor of the House.

"I would not predict that anyone will take an incorrect view," he said. "But certainly, the correct view is pretty clear."

Stevens, who retired in 2010, was nominated by Republican President Gerald Ford and later became part of the Liberal bloc of the court.
