GWYNN’S ISLAND, Virginia – On Doug Sweet’s first trip to the United States Capitol, when he was 13 in 1975, he tilted his head back, looked at the shiny white dome, and thought it was the most impressive thing he had ever seen.
On his second trip to Capitol Hill, he joined a crowd of Trump supporters who forced their way into the seat of the United States Congress and ended his visit handcuffed face down.
The 45-year journey between these two visits was marked by a brilliant idealism and belief in dark conspiracies, a lonely existence and a new brotherhood with those convinced that there is no way Joe Biden will beat Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
It doesn’t matter that no evidence of widespread electoral fraud has emerged, or that more than 50 complaints filed by the Trump campaign have been dismissed by the courts.
Mr Sweet put his trust in Mr Trump and his allies, who for weeks implored supporters to rise up against the outcome of a national election they said was rigged.
