Before Powell received the ax on Sunday, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a close ally of Trump and former top federal prosecutor, called the president’s legal team a “national embarrassment.”

But when asked why Trump wasn’t firing former New York mayor Giuliani and the other lawyers who remain on the team, someone familiar with the president’s thinking gave a profane shrug.
