WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Mariano Rivera Baseball Hall of Fame.

Trump, a Yankees fan, on Monday called Rivera "perhaps the biggest pitcher of all time".

Rivera is a relief pitcher who has spent his entire 19-year career with the New York Yankees.

He holds the all-time record for saves and was the first unanimously elected Baseball Hall of Fame player when he was featured in the summer.

Trump recalled Rivera's "domination" en route to a career including 13 All-Star selections and five World Series titles. The president also congratulated Panama, who became a US citizen through his charity work.

The White House ceremony made reference to Rivera's career, including the song "Enter Sandman" by Metallica.
