Lawyers working on the Trump campaign said Rudy Giuliani seemed “deranged” and ill-prepared to lead the legal effort to overturn the election result, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

A turning point was reportedly the November 13 defeat at the U.S. 3rd District Court of Appeals in Pennsylvania, where a judge rejected Trump’s campaign to invalidate thousands of mail-in ballots received after election day .
After the outcome, some of the campaign’s leading advocates began to pull away from the effort to overturn the outcome, believing it to mark the end of the campaign’s attempt to credibly challenge the vote count. But Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, fought.
Giuliani’s efforts to overturn the election result have at times been ludicrous, with the former New York mayor holding a press conference at a suburban garden center amid apparent confusion at booking locations. During a press briefing on November 19, black liquid could be seen trickling down Giuliani’s face, and fellow campaign lawyer Sidney Powell alleged a massive conspiracy to annul the election involving Venezuelan Communists and Democrats .
Neither she nor Giuliani provided compelling evidence to support this claim, and the campaign split from Powell.
According to the Post, some of the campaign and GOP lawyers involved in the election challenge began to distance themselves from Giuliani earlier in November and sought to avoid meetings with Giuliani and his team. When Giuliani and Powell were asked by other campaign officials to provide evidence to support their fraud claims, they were unable to produce it.
Some lawyers have described Giuliani as appearing “deranged” in their comments to the Post.
Giuliani clashed with other lawyers in the Trump campaign, according to the report, and continued to tell the president he had a serious chance of winning his lawsuits, while other officials offered more realistic assessments. Trump, after November 13, handed over control of the legal effort to Giuliani and his team.
A senior administration official criticized Giuliani’s strategy. “You just have to roll up everyone who’s willing to do it in a clown car, and when it’s time for a press conference, roll them out,” the official described it to The Post.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Giuliani’s conspiracy theories would have turned out to be too important even for Trump, according to reports, and although he continues to claim the election was stolen from him, he has approved the release of vital funds for Biden’s transition.
