The U.S. Treasury Department must give former President Trump’s attorneys a 72-hour warning if he allows his tax returns to be released to Democrats, a judge said on Friday, according to a report.
U.S. Representative Richard Neal, D-Mass., Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is still seeking returns after being denied access in 2019 by then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who claimed Democrats did not have a “legitimate legislative objective” for the request, Politico reported.
Neal had cited a law that requires the Treasury to hand over tax documents at the request of House tax commissions.
Democrats sued federal in a case that is still pending a year and a half later.

Washington, DC, District Court Judge Trevor McFadden, appointed by Trump, put the two-week order in place because the Treasury Department could turn the tide under the new Biden administration.
He also ordered the two sides to present a situation report on February 3.
The appointment of the Treasury secretary chosen by President Biden, former Federal Reserve boss Janet Yellen, was approved unanimously by the Senate Finance Committee on Friday and is now heading to the entire Senate for a vote on Monday.

Douglas Letter, House General Counsel, told McFadden at the hearing that the Treasury has a “clear legal obligation” to hand over documents Democrats still want even if he’s not in office, Politico says . “Our feeling is enough is enough. The status is clear,” he said.
It is not known whether the Treasury Department under Biden will allow the House access to the statements.
