President Trump strongly criticized Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein on Wednesday, hours after having retweeted an image showing Rosenstein and several other former and current officials locked up in a prison cell.
Trump has long criticized Rosenstein, who named Robert S. Mueller III to oversee the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 campaign. The president has repeatedly sought to discredit the investigation as " witch hunt".
Asked in an interview with The New York Post about why he believes Rosenstein should be placed behind bars, Trump replied, "He should never have chosen a special advocate."
Trump declined to answer a follow-up question about his intention to fire Rosenstein.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump criticized the Mueller probe and retweeted several tweets in the morning from the Trump Train, a fan account.
One of them showed behind the bars ten former and current members of the government and asked them: "Now that complicity with Russia is a proven lie, when treason trials start? "
Among the people represented is Rosenstein, who was appointed to his post by Trump and who, until recently, directly supervised Mueller's work. Former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and former FBI director James B. Comey, whom Trump fired last year, are also part of it.
In his interview with Wednesday's New York Post, Trump also announced his intention to return to New York at the end of his stay at the White House.
He claimed that the Nobel Peace Prize would be denied him in the same way that his television show, "The Apprentice", was denied an Emmy Award in 2004 and 2005.

Regarding Gillibrand, Trump said he "supported her early" but she "would not do it", citing her position on gun control.
Last year, the president sparked criticism in a tweet describing Gillibrand as a person who had previously asked him to donate and who "would do anything for them". He did not use this language on Wednesday but again touched on the subject.
"She would be in Trump Tower without asking – a word louder than asking – for contributions to the campaign," Trump told the New York Post.
