WASHINGTON – President Trump awarded the National Medal of the Arts to country music singers Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs minutes after being impeached for the second time on Wednesday afternoon, a White House spokesperson confirmed.
Skaggs, 61, is an American country and bluegrass singer who has won the Grammy Award 15 times while Keith, 59, performed at a pre-inauguration celebration for Trump in Washington, DC, in 2016.
The National Medal of the Arts, created by Congress in 1984, is the highest honor bestowed on artists and the arts in the United States.
Wednesday’s honors continue the president’s frenzy of last-minute rewards and pardons as he prepares to leave the White House.
Earlier this month, Trump awarded the Medal of Freedom to representatives of the GOP. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Devin Nunes of California – two of the president’s strongest supporters on Capitol Hill.
Jordan was a staunch opponent of Wednesday’s impeachment charge accusing Trump of instigating an insurgency during the siege on Capitol Hill last week, accusing Democrats of wanting to “cancel” Trump.
Last month, the president launched a pre-Christmas pardon blitz, excusing former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, longtime partner Roger Stone, and Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
