WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump continues to recognize great American athletes with the country's highest civilian honor.
Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Liberty to great basketball player Jerry West, formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers, at a ceremony at the White House.
Trump said West "deserved" the medal for his years as a player, general manager and supporter of the country's veterans.
West, 81, has noted his humble beginnings in West Virginia and his sport has prevailed: "It keeps on surprising me places where you can go in this world to the pursuit of a basketball. "
Last month, Trump handed the medal to Bob Cousy, a 91-year-old basketball player. Earlier this year, golfer Tiger Woods received the same honor.
