The Trump administration released a pamphlet called “The 1776 Report,” the final report of a civic education committee established last year on the day Martin Luther King Jr. Trump announced the 1776 Commission in September 2020 to promote “patriotic education,” and the report released on Monday is the culmination of its efforts. In the new report, the administration cites as opponent The New York Times“1619 Project,” a suite of historical journalism and essays postulating the founding of the United States not as the Constitutional Convention of 1776, but rather as the first landing of a slave ship on American shores in 1619. The Project titled essay won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for comment. The material in the ‘1776 Report’ reads: ‘Turning to bitterness and judgment, the distorted stories of those like Howard Zinn or the journalists behind the’ 1619 Project ‘prevented their students from learning to think inductively with a rich repertoire of, and literary referents … They scorn the students of today, just as they doubt the humanity, the goodness or the benevolence of the greatest historical figures of America. The brochure also warns of a “shadow government” in passages that echo President Donald Trump’s own unproven warnings against the “deep state” and compares contemporary racial justice activists to advocates of the ‘slavery. The Trump booklet says, “Indeed, there are some strange similarities between 21st century identity politics activists and 19th century slavery apologists.”
