WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump is set to present one of the country’s highest civilian accolades to two of his most outspoken allies in Congress, California Rep. Devin Nunes and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, as he seeks to reward loyalists with just over two weeks remaining in his tenure.

A White House official has confirmed that Trump will present Nunes with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday. The former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee has been a staunch supporter of Trump during inquiries into Russian interference in the 2016 election and the president’s impeachment in 2019 by the Democratic-led House.

The award, created by President John F. Kennedy, aims to recognize those who have made “particularly meritorious contributions” to national security, world peace or “to cultural activities or other significant public or private enterprises.”

The award comes as Trump has rewarded his supporters with the perks and prestige that come with serving on a multitude of advisory committees and federal commissions before stepping down on January 20.

Jordan, one of the GOP leaders trying to undermine confidence in the 2020 presidential election results, is expected to receive the award next week. Trump’s intention to present the award to lawmakers was first reported by the Washington Post.
