WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said Sunday that special advocate Robert Mueller should not testify before Congress about the investigation into Russia's interference in the country. Presidential election of 2016.
Trump said on Twitter that congressional Democrats were looking for a "remake" of Mueller's report, which refused to determine whether the president's efforts to obstruct the investigation constituted an obstacle to justice.
"Bob Mueller should not testify. No redo for the Dems! "Trump tweeted.
The Mueller report chronicles Russia's efforts to help Trump win the elections in 2016, but notes that Trump and his campaign have not engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Moscow.
The Republican president called the investigation an expensive "witch hunt" and tried to qualify the findings of the victory report.
The Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee seems best able to organize Mueller's testimony, probably as early as May 15.
Attorney General William Barr, criticized by the Democrats for managing the publication of the report, said he saw no problem with Mueller testifying.
Mr Barr will head to another congressional confrontation on Monday when he failed to meet deadlines for submitting the full and unmodified report on Mueller's Democrats' request.
