President Donald Trump said he spoke to Tim Cook about tariffs and South Korean competitor Apple, Samsung.

Trump said Cook had argued that it would be difficult for Apple to pay tariffs, while Samsung is not facing the same hurdle because much of its manufacturing is in South Korea .

"I thought he had made a very compelling argument," Trump told reporters Sunday. The president announced that he was dining on Friday with Apple's CEO.

Trump has ordered 10% tariffs on an additional $ 300 billion worth of products imported from China. Originally, all these tariffs were to come into effect on September 1, but Trump has postponed import duties to December 15, fearing repercussions on the holiday shopping season.

"It's hard for Apple to pay the rates if it's competing with a very good company that's not one," Trump said.

Rates delayed until December include consumer electronics products such as cell phones. Apple's shares closed up 4% on Tuesday after Trump made that decision.

Apple is expected to release its new version of the iPhone in September.
