"My administration looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Congress on the continuation of negotiations with Japan towards the conclusion of a comprehensive trade agreement that will result in fairer and reciprocal trade between the United States and Japan. ", said the White House in a statement announcing the trade deal.

Trump also announced in Congress that he would sign an executive agreement with Japan on digital commerce.

The administration has not revealed the details of the trade agreement.

The announcement of a first trade deal comes after Trump told the Group of Seven summit in August that he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reached an agreement in principle.

"It's about agriculture, e-commerce and a lot of other things, it's a very big deal and we agreed in principle," Trump said at the time.

This deal could be a victory for a president involved in trade wars, especially with China.

Trump managed to negotiate and sign an update to the North American Free Trade Agreement, but it is unclear whether Congress will approve the treaty, called the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement.

Trump also signed an updated trade agreement with South Korea, although critics say the changes were minor and largely cosmetic.

White House officials are expected to continue trade talks with China. High level negotiations are planned for October. Trump has imposed tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports as part of its trade war, and China has responded with a slew of tariffs.
