Sterling, Virginia – A man seen forcefully exhaling on two women outside President Trump’s golf course in Virginia has been charged with assault.
Raymond Deskins, 61, has been charged with tort assault after a private citizen obtained a warrant through a county magistrate, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday. Deskins did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press.
The altercation happened on Saturday outside the Trump National Golf Club, where the president was going to play. Protesters and supporters regularly gather in front of the club’s entrance when playing golf.
Widely shared video on social media, Deskins takes a deep breath, then blows on two unidentified women after one asks him to escape and points out that he’s not wearing a mask.
“It’s assault,” one of the women said next.
“I blew on you,” Deskins responds, then exhales on them again.
An anti-Trump protester who was there, Kathy Beynette, told CBS News that Deskins crossed the street to where the Trump protesters were gathered while the two groups waited for the president to arrive.
Virginia requires masks to be worn in certain locations to stop the spread of the coronavirus, but they should not be worn outside.
Deskin wore a Trump shirt and an inflatable pool tube with Trump’s likeness around his waist, with the words “Keep America Great” on it.
Several members of the Loudoun County Supervisory Board sent a letter to law enforcement officials on Sunday calling for a full investigation. The letter said the two women protested the president outside the golf club.
The sheriff’s office said the altercation was investigated at the scene but law enforcement did not witness the altercation and the video did not capture her. entirety. The sheriff’s office said it had informed both parties who said they were assaulted that they could apply for a warrant from a county magistrate.
