Supporters of Donald Trump at the Iowa rally on Saturday, awaiting the ex-president’s word, worried “about a coming civil war” and said he would “save the world.”
Trump will address today’s rally, which will be held at the Iowa State Fairground in Des Moines, around 8 p.m. ET. Polls show he is more popular in the state than President Joe Biden. Trump had a 53 percent approval rating, according to a recent one Des Moines Register/ Mediacom poll, the highest he has ever received in Iowa. Biden was languishing at 31%.
Participant Lori Levi told MSNBC Republicans are about “as weak as they could be in Congress.” She said that in her mind, GOP lawmakers are like Democrats, with the exception of Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Rand Paul and a few others.
“They are part of the establishment. They don’t care about the American people because they are in their elite little tower,” she said. “So we’re just fed up with it, you know, and we’re not going to take it anymore. I see a civil war coming. I see it. I see a civil war coming.”
Another participant said that her whole family “has gone liberal” and that she hates Trump. But, she hoped that would backfire, adding that she had “complete faith that this man [Trump] will basically save the world. Not just us. Everyone.”
Meanwhile, a Trump supporter said she decided to leave Alaska for Iowa after learning the former president would hold a rally in Des Moines.
“He says everything straight out, no BS, and that’s what this country needs. No lies,” she said of Trump.
Rich Thomas, another rally attendee, said he came to the rally to give “documents” to Trump’s legal team. “Our King, Jesus Christ, has spoken of getting you back to your office in the White House now,” he said.
A video circulating on Twitter showed “Trump won” flags and banners installed along the road leading to the rally, with a supporter saying “Iowa is Trump’s country.”
In another extract, three Trump supporters said they were at the rally because “he’s the greatest president, the best we’ve ever had” and described Biden as “dead.”
“I support him, he supports us,” one participant said of Trump.
Rally organizers told We Are Iowa they expected tens of thousands of participants on Saturday. Although the doors only opened in the afternoon, some participants were seen camping night Thursday and Friday.
