Trump on Saturday criticized the actor "Empire" Jussie Smollett at a rally in Greenbay, Wisconsin.
He said he first heard the term "MAGA country" in discussions on the Smollett affair, which he called "shame for our country".
"This is MAGA country," he said. "I did not hear that term until this third-class Chicago actor came out and said I was beaten by the MAGA country, can you believe it?"
Smollett said in January he was a victim of a hate crime in Chicago, in which two men attacked him and chanted racist and homophobic slurs. He also said that his assailants shouted "MAGA", a shortcut for Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again" and other terms favorable to Trump.
"It's a hate-motivated crime," he said, "he was beaten by the MAGA country, it turned out to be a total lie," he added. "This case in Chicago is a shame for our country, a shame."

Chicago police later stated that Smollett had organized the attack because he was "dissatisfied with his salary". Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct, but the charges against him were dropped last month.
In February, Trump said Smollett's remarks were "racist and dangerous."
