Trump: the United States is considering buying from Greenland, "it's essentially a big real estate transaction"

President Trump has expressed Sunday on reports that his administration was planning to buy Greenland.

After landing in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump spoke of the rumors circulating around Marine One, saying that Denmark was losing money by keeping Greenland under control.

"It's essentially an important real estate transaction, you can do a lot of things, it hurts Denmark a lot because it loses about $ 700 million a year," he said. "So they carry it at a loss, and strategically for the United States, that would be good, and we are a great ally of Denmark and we are helping Denmark and we are protecting Denmark."

Trump said that he might travel to Greenland in the near future, but said the problem was not a top priority for the administration.

"I'm thinking of going there, I'm not going to go, but maybe I'm going in. We're going to Poland and then to Denmark – not for that reason at all, but looking at us," he said. "It's not number one on the burner."

The White House's chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, had confirmed this information earlier in the day during an interview with "Fox News Sunday" and had said that this information was under study.

"It's an interesting story, it's growing, we're looking at it, we do not know it," said Kudlow. "Years ago, [then-President] Harry Truman wanted to buy Greenland. Denmark is the owner of Greenland, Denmark is an ally. "

The Wall Street Journal had previously indicated that President Trump was interested in buying Greenland and that the White House would seek to leverage its "abundant resources and geopolitical importance."

"Greenland is a strategic place up there, and they have a lot of precious minerals," added Kudlow.

"I do not want to predict a result, I'm just saying that the president, who knows one or two things about buying real estate, wants to take a look."
