Trump threw crumpled newspaper article on Pence: Book

  • Trump once got pissed off and started a newspaper article about Pence, according to a new book.
  • Pence returned the crumpled paper to Trump, he said.
  • The episode was described in an excerpt from the book by Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender.

President Donald Trump was so upset by the news that his campaign aide Corey Lewandowski was heading to Vice President Mike Pence’s team in 2018 that he crumpled the newspaper article about it and threw it at Pence, according to an excerpt from a new Wall Street Journal book by Michael Bender published on Friday.

“So disloyal,” Trump reportedly told Pence as he launched the newspaper article. The excerpt said Trump feared the new recruit “would make him look weak.”

Trump administration officials described the episode in Bender as one of the few examples of Pence confronting Trump during their tenure, according to the excerpt.

Pence told Trump that Jared Kushner, Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, asked him to bring Lewandowski on board and that he had lunch with Trump to discuss the move, according to the snippet.

Pence picked up the crumpled newspaper article and sent it back to Trump, Bender wrote. Then Pence “leaned over to the president and pointed a finger a few inches from his chest,” the snippet said.

“We have explained all the details of that to you,” Pence reportedly said. “We did it for you – as a favor. And that’s how you answer? You have to clarify the facts.”

Trump disputed on Friday that the paper battle ever took place.

“The story written by third-rate reporter Michael Bender that Mike Pence and I argued against Corey Lewandowski is totally false,” Trump said in a statement. “No such fight has ever taken place, it is fiction like so many other stories written in the large number of books that come out of me.”

Bender’s latest book, “Frankly, We Won This Election: The Inside Story of Trump’s Loss,” is due out on Tuesday.
