President Donald Trump is now angry with personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and has asked his staff not to pay him his legal fees, the Washington Post reported and confirmed by The New York Times.
Trump was impeached for the second time on Wednesday. The House of Representatives published an article impeachment for “incitement to insurgency”; it was approved 232-205 with ten Republicans voting in favor of impeaching the president. The charge relates to Trump’s role in instigating an attempted coup on Capitol Hill last week that left five people dead. He is now heading to the Senate for a trial.
According to The Post and The Times, Trump has become increasingly isolated – removing some aides, while others leave the White House emptying itself in the last week of the Trump administration.
Giuliani is one of those confidants whose relationship with the president has frayed.
The New York Times reported that White House officials have started blocking Giuliani’s calls to Trump and, according to The Post, Trump has told his aides not to pay him.
Trump was “offended” by some of Giuliani’s actions, including asking for $ 20,000 for his work to fight the election results, the Times reported. (A fee that Giuliani declined.) Trump also asked his aides to personally approve any reimbursement to Giuliani for travel while challenging the election results, The Post reported.
Giuliani had encouraged Trump to believe in baseless conspiracy theories of non-existent voter fraud. Trump and his Republican allies have failed to win any of the dozens of lawsuits they have taken in court to try to overturn the election results.
Giuliani was also criticized for his words at the “Save America” rally that preceded the siege on Capitol Hill.
The lawyer had called for a “fight trial” at the rally, but later claimed he was simply referring to “Game of Thrones” and not calling for violence.
Many, including former U.S. deputy lawyers who worked with him, said they were appalled by his comments.

A senior administration official told the Post that it was not only Giuliani that Trump was angry with, but also Vice President Mike Pence, press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, Economic Advisor Larry Kudlow, National Security Advisor Robert O Brien and Chief of Staff Mark Meadows who he says have failed to defend him following recent events.
“The president is quite taken aback,” the senior administration official told the Post. “No one is there.”
