MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – Conservatives from across Michigan flocked to Mackinac Island this weekend for the state’s biennial Republican leadership conference.
In addition to admiring the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron or enjoying a unique journey through time at the island’s “Grand Hotel”, attendees also heard from top Republicans from across the country, including Texas. Senator Ted Cruz, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham.
While the reunion is meant to be an opportunity for Michigan Republicans to exchange ideas and chart the way forward for the party, the event’s secret ballot straw poll gives an unofficial indication of who the Michiganders are. would like to see atop the Republican ticket in 2024.
Unsurprisingly, former President Donald J. Trump took first place with 47.5%. This is according to The Detroit News which sponsored the straw poll.
Although head and shoulders above any other potential candidate, the rating falls short of the former president’s share of the vote at CPAC in Dallas in July, where he won 70 percent of the vote. By comparison, the 45th president won 55% of the vote at the February CPAC in Orlando.
About 740 people, all Republicans, were polled for this weekend’s poll, according to The Detroit News.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, with about 25% of the vote, was the second-highest ballot voter, which matches his straw poll performance at both CPACs this year. Both CPACs, however, included polls with a potential slate of candidates that did not include the name of former President Trump. DeSantis was the clear winner of both conferences in these polls.
Rounding out the top five in Mackinac: South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was third with 8% of the vote, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz had 6%, as did former United States Ambassador to the Nations United, Nikki Haley.
When it comes to the influence former President Trump has over Republicans in Michigan, 44% said an endorsement from Trump would not affect whether or not they support a candidate.
When it comes to the issues that Republican voters deemed most important at the conference, The Detroit News reports that 28% chose “electoral integrity,” which ended up at the top of the list. Taxes and spending followed closely with 25%, abortion received 11% of the vote and inflation took 10%.

In terms of tackling COVID-19, 56% of those polled said the government has no role to play in mitigating the pandemic.
