Trump's first economic adviser leaves office

The biggest economist in the White House is about to leave, President Trump revealed in a tweet Sunday night.

"Kevin Hassett, who did such a good job for me and the administration, will be leaving soon. His very talented replacement will be named as soon as I get back to the United States. I want to thank Kevin for all he did. It's a real friend! "Trump tweeted Sunday night as he traveled to Europe for a five-day trip.

Hassett, who chairs the Council of Economic Advisers and helped revamp Trump's fiscal signing in 2017, left while Trump is battling growing trade wars with China and Mexico.

Conservative economist Hassett normally defended free trade policies, but recently had to defend Trump's use of tariffs to pressure his rivals in the US economy.

Nevertheless, he denied that Trump's policies had nothing to do with his departure.

"The history of trading and that of departure are completely different stories," he said Sunday night.

He gave his opinion last week and plans to stay about a month longer.

Hassett, who joined the administration in September 2017, said he considered the job as a two-year post.

The advisor hit the headlines earlier this year when he hinted that fired federal employees were "better off" because they enjoyed free vacations.
