Former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will be suspended if it ends on the Sabbath, in response to a request from one of his lawyers, who is a practicing Jew.
Trump’s impeachment attorney David Schoen has called for the trial – which begins on Tuesday – to be suspended temporarily from sunset Friday to Saturday.
“I apologize for the inconvenience that my request not to conduct impeachment proceedings during the Jewish Sabbath will undoubtedly result in others involved in the proceedings,” Schoen wrote in a letter to Senate leaders last week. .
“The practices and prohibitions are however obligatory for me; therefore, respectfully, I have no choice but to make this request.
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Sunday that the Senate would grant Schoen’s request.
“We respect their request and we will answer it of course. Discussions with the parties concerned on the structure of the trial are continuing, ”said Schumer spokesman Angelo Roefaro.
