The Transportation Security Administration reminds travelers to know the rules when packing for that next trip.
The reason: TSA officers at Marshall BWI Airport recently found several prohibited items at checkpoints. And in a statement, the TSA said all of this translates into “more bag checks and slower check lines.”
“We see a lot of people who may not have traveled for a long time, and they don’t know or forget what can and cannot fit in carry-on baggage,” said Andrea Mishoe, Federal Security Director. TSA for Maryland.
All of these bag checks, she said, are not optimal during a pandemic.
“The idea is to reduce the points of contact, and a baggage check does the opposite,” Mishoe said.
The most commonly found items, according to the TSA, are bottles of liquids, gels, and aerosols that exceed the 3.4-ounce limit in size. Travelers should be aware of the “3-1-1 rule” when it comes to hand-held fluids, and larger containers should instead be placed in a registered bag.
An exception to this rule, the TSA said, is hand sanitizer. One 12-ounce container of disinfectant per passenger is allowed inside carry-on baggage, but they should expect it to be screened separately. Larger water bottles are also suitable if they are empty.
Ammunition is also being brought to checkpoints, the TSA said, and the agency reminds travelers to review the rules for traveling with a gun and ammunition.
