Tucson Restaurant Owner Strives To Be Part Of The Solution, Not The Problem

TUCSON, Arizona – As cases continue to rise in Arizona, some experts are calling for a new shelter-in-place order and that would mean restaurants, retailers and more would close if adopted.

Ray Flores, President of Flores Concepts, hopes to keep the doors of his restaurants open. He explained that he worked hand in hand with the city and county to be part of the solution rather than the problem.

“We wrote a plan, it was called our Si 100 plan,” Flores explained.

The Si 100 plan is Flores Concept’s line of response to slow the spread of the virus. It includes all the security measures seen by customers visiting the downtown staple.

Flores has invested in dividers between tables, signage telling customers they need social distancing, and even installed medical grade air filters.

“Our family who has some experience in the medical world also decided that we would take a very aggressive approach to preparing restaurants in the best possible way, not only for our customers, but also for our staff and members of the team. family who work within the restaurant, ”said Flores.

Omar Salazar has worked at El Charro throughout the pandemic and explained that normally the restaurant is usually very busy.

“We’re only closing for Christmas. So with all of that it’s a bit difficult,” said Salazar.

The restaurant has seen sales drop 35-40% in some weeks, according to Flores.

The University of Arizona’s COVID-19 modeling team recommended a shelter-in-place that would include closing meals inside again.

Salazar points out that he and his colleagues need restaurants to stay open.

“A lot of people depend on this job. It would be a really good effect, it’s really bad. We can’t qualify for unemployment. We really need it. It’s our only income, it’s my job. It’s my passion, ”he explained.

Her boss agrees.

“I think as long as restaurants react responsibly, act responsibly, they put in mitigation efforts like we’ve installed it and others do,” said Flores.

Instead, he wants to see the public take a more active role in wearing his masks and social distancing.

“It is not a proven fact that restaurants are going the extra mile or causing the spread of COVID-19. In fact, any public setting can spread – close contact, however, is the place. where it happens the most, ”he told me.
