Russian biologists took more than 300 samples from the polar regions of Siberia and brought them to the Moscow laboratory. These specimens, taken in remote areas of northeastern Russia, contained two different types of worms.
Worms remain for several weeks in cups maintained at 20 degrees Celsius. Specimens of the genus "panagrolaimus", one of the species of worms, were removed from the frozen layers about 32,000 years ago. These layers are located 30 meters underground.
Specimens of other species, the "plectus" worms, were extracted at a depth of about 3.5 meters. The average age of the samples is 42,000 years. In other words, the worms have not shown signs of life for 42 thousand years, they stayed where they were frozen. The scientists carried the specimens extremely sterile.
Today, with climate change, frozen soils in Siberia are dissolved up to 80 centimeters deep. The deeper temperature effects have not changed, and the frozen ground has not dissolved for thousands of years
All these data show that the worms who relive in their containers sleep extremely long. Of course, such events do not occur for the first time.
