Scientists have identified genetic variations that increase the risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
According to Sience Daily, research conducted by the Danish project iPSYCH, Harvard Broad and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the SUNY Upstate School of Medicine and the Consortium on Psychiatric Genomics have identified genetic variations that increase the risk of ADHD.
As part of the research, genetic variations in the genomes of more than 20,000 people with ADHD were compared to those of 35,000 healthy people. Scientists who have identified 12 regions in which individuals with certain genetic variations increase the risk of developing the disease, said the discovery would be beneficial for understanding the biology that underlies the development of ADHD.
The study also revealed that the same genetic variations, which increase the likelihood of a diagnosis of ADHD, affect the inability to control neglect and impulses in the general population.
The details of the research were published in the journal "Nature Genetics".
