Turner and Hidalgo explain who will take priority over COVID-19 super vaccine site at NRG Park, how it will work

HOUSTON – Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner explained that some people would be given priority at the NRG Park COVID-19 super vaccination site for a phased launch Tuesday and full commissioning Wednesday.

Hidalgo explained that officials are pursuing a “fair, effective and equitable” vaccination using the Harris County and City of Houston vaccination waiting lists. With that in mind, Hidalgo and Turner said people in 10 zip codes will be given priority due to a number of factors including, but not limited to, the number of cases in their area as well as the lack of access to health care, underlying medical conditions. and other economic and social data associated with people in postal codes.

When those people are served, she said those vaccinated would be taken from the larger list.

Turner explained that the waiting list will have four priorities.

Priority 1: People 65 and over who live in a high-risk postal code
Priority 2: people aged 65 and over
Priority 3: People aged 60 to 64 with underlying health conditions and living in a high-risk postal code
Priority 4: People aged 60 to 64 with underlying health problems

To sign up for the Harris County waitlist, visit the immunization link on ReadyHarris.org or call 832-927-8787. To join the City of Houston waiting list, people 65 years of age and older can call the City Department’s Regional Agency on Aging at 832-393-4301.

The NRG Park site is expected to begin immunizations for eligible members of the public on Wednesday.

A limited number of vaccines will be provided as part of a soft launch of the center on Tuesday, authorities said in a press release.

The site is designed to serve 6,000 people per day, seven days a week for three weeks before switching to second doses for three weeks. A total of 142,000 people are expected to be fully immunized.
