With the help of an aged and revived legendary Jedi, Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” finally triumphed over heartwarming visual favorite, “The Office.”
For the week of December 14 – in which the ‘Star Wars’ spinoff Season 2 finale delivered quite a few fanservice in its surprise cameo and plot reveal – ‘The Mandalorian’ s ‘soared to No. 1 on Nielsen’s Top 10 Programs List, on the sidelines of the workplace sitcom directed by Steve Carell. The victory marks the first time a non-Netflix show has landed number one on Nielsen’s streaming rankings. “The Mandalorian” also set a weekly record for the Disney Slus series, totaling approximately 1.34 billion viewing minutes.
“The Office” continued its steady audience growth before its final week on the platform before migrating to NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, with 1.31 billion viewing minutes over its nine seasons.
Like the week before, Nielsen’s Top 10 December 14-20 was, with the exception of “The Mandalorian,” completely dominated by shows on Netflix. Apart from a few ranking changes – “The Crown” dropped from 3rd to 4th place, “Virgin River” dropped from 3rd to 7th, “Grey’s Anatomy” dropped from 7th to 4th – the number of viewers remained virtually the same. The only newcomer to this week’s mix is a holiday romance comedy written by and starring Lauren Swickard (“The Pact,” “Safe Haven”), “A California Christmas,” which premiered December 14 on Netflix. On December 22, the streamer announced that the breakout’s unexpected success was getting a sequel.
Nielsen’s ranking is based on the number of minutes consumers with access to streaming platforms watch during the week. Streamers like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney Plus don’t publish their own detailed stats and these streaming metrics are based on Nielsen estimates. Nielsen also ranks Hulu in its top 10 charts.
