Twelve hot questions for MLB trade deadline – The Athletic

It was no shock that the teams led by Dave Dombrowski and Billy Beane made the first two important exchanges in July.

The acquisition of right handed Andrew Cashner of the Orioles by the Red Sox on Saturday was decisive for the Dombrowski vintage.

Athletics' acquisition of righthander Homer Bailey of the Royals on Sunday was typical of Beane, a preliminary strike from a frame that always adds up when his team has a chance to reach the playoffs.

Neither agreement nor was it even close to a blockbuster. Cashner may not qualify for the playoffs if the Red Sox qualify and if their other starting pitchers are in good health. Bailey, although impressive with a points average of 3.49 in his last seven starts, is not exactly heading to Cooperstown.

Nevertheless, Dombrowski and Beane acted while many of their counterparts needing to start playing, were holding back, at least for now. The trade deadline – the new single deadline – is two weeks from Wednesday.
