MINNEAPOLIS – The Twins placed catcher Mitch Garver on the injured list with a sprained left ankle and sent third-baseman Miguel Sano out of his reeducation mission nearly four months after suffering a serious heel cut law.
Minnesota made the move Wednesday before their match against Los Angeles, following Garver's injury the night before in a collision with the Angels club with Angels star Shohei Ohtani. Garver was diagnosed with a high sprain, which may take longer to heal than the other varieties, but Garver and his manager, Rocco Baldelli, have expressed relief that the injury is not worse. Garver wore a walking boot to the pavilion. No timetable for his return to action has been announced.
"There's not a lot of inflammation, and we're happy about it," said Garver, who on Tuesday caught running back Byron Buxton in the eighth inning, and scored to Ohtani to prevent the goal to score when Ohtani would slip on his ankle leg to clumsily twist in the 4-3 win by the Twins.
There was no ill will, however.
"You're supposed to slip into the marble as he did.I thought it was a very clean slide," Garver said.
The Twins lead the leagues with 16 home runs and 38 RBIs from the catch-up position. Jason Castro and Willians Astudillo also contributed. Losing Garver was clearly not the way they wanted to bring Sano back. Garver had an outstanding season with .329 with four doubles, nine home runs and 19 RBIs in 25 games. Its OPS is 1.164.
After suffering a heel injury on Jan. 26 at a celebration in the Dominican Republic when he slipped on metal steps after his team's winter championship, Sano was finally allowed to go to action. He underwent a debridement procedure that removes damaged tissue or foreign objects from an injury on March 5th. Sano played 10 times during his juvenile rehab, stopping at classes at Fort Myers, Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Rochester.
The 26-year-old slugger, whose major career has been marked by more persistent injuries than home runs, beat .199 with .679 in 71 games last season, while spending months. in the minor leagues for a repackaging.
"He's going to play a lot, full lap," Baldelli said, adding, "I think he's fit, I think he feels good."
Sano did not play in Minnesota's 8-7 win against the Angels on Wednesday.
The return of Sano means that Marwin Gonzalez will use his multiposition skills. It can play in the four field positions and in the outer field corners. It is likely that he is still in training almost every day while Baldelli gives rest to various regulars, including Sano.
"He's probably just calling out and playing, it's the moment," Baldelli said.
