Twitch streamers plan to host a one-day blackout in hopes of raising awareness of a practice called “hate raids,” Axios reported on Monday.
The ban day, which went viral on Twitter via the hashtag #ADayOffTwitch, is scheduled to take place on September 1. sending dummy and bot accounts to fill a streamer’s chat with abuse, according to the Washington Post.
Raids often target users in marginalized communities with floods of insults and hate symbols.
Users started posting their experiences earlier Monday under the hashtag #TwitchDoBetter, started by RekItRaven and other streamers.
Raven and other streamers on the platform say Twitch was negligent in not fixing the issue.
“Every marginalized identity creator I know has at least a story, a baseline, even if they don’t air regularly,” she told the Post. “What is most terrifying is that hate is aimed at all of us in the same way. Size, frequency, status – none of it matters. They seek out the marginalized identity and get to work.
I want to share information I learned after the hate raid on AM. #TwitchDoBetter
1. My chat is in subscriber-only mode and the raid started seconds after “creatineoverdose” followed up and posted a weird message in my chat (I guess see what they might send) 1 / pic.twitter.com/CvpB7MDZ8b

While Twitch has made an effort to suppress bot accounts in the past, its moves have not had a significant impact on fictitious accounts targeting marginalized users, the Post reported.
“I think it’s important to come together in a show of solidarity with those who have been affected by these heinous raids,” Raven told Axios.
