That pretty much sums up the consensus on Twitter on Thursday after CBS, Global Citizen and Live Nation brought in Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Julianne Hough to lead a new activism reality series.
“The Activist” – hosted by Usher and co-hosted by Chopra Jonas and Hough (whatever that means) – will see six militant contestants go head to head “to bring meaningful change to one of three pressing universal causes: health, education and the environment, “according to CBS’s widely criticized press release.
After learning about the controversial cast and premise of the show, an onslaught of skeptical Twitter users asked several questions. Mainly: who asked for this? And why?

According to the network’s plot description, “The Activist” will see participants “compete against each other in challenges to promote their causes, with their success measured through online engagement, social metrics, and contribution from hosts.”
The finalists will attend the G-20 summit scheduled for October 30-31 in Italy and “meet with world leaders in the hope of securing funding and awareness for their causes”. (And before asking: no, this project is not presented as satire.)

By the end of Thursday, the upcoming series had been rated “disgusting,” “insanely cheesy,” “horrible,” “literal performance activism” and “everything that’s wrong with society.”

“The Activist,” which will also feature appearances by musicians and “notable activists,” premieres October 22 on CBS.
Representatives of the network did not immediately respond to the Times’ request for comment on Friday.
