A reality TV show with celebrities? Now where have we heard this before?
CBS ‘most recent reality series, “The Activist,” is already garnering many backlash on social media even before its premiere.
According to Deadline, “’The Activist’ is a competition series featuring six aspiring activists paired with three prominent public figures who work together to bring about meaningful change to one of three vitally important global causes: health, education and the environment. “
Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Julianne Hough are expected to co-host the series produced by Global Citizen.
Activists will participate in challenges to promote their causes and their success should be measured using social media engagement and host judgment. There will be three teams whose main goal is to create effective movements that “amplify their message, lead to action and move them forward to the G20 summit in Rome, Italy,” according to Deadline.
At the summit, they will meet with world leaders to help them raise funds and raise awareness of their causes.
The show’s premise sparked a massive amount of fiery Twitter trolls from users disparaging the show. Actress Jameela Jamil wrote“Couldn’t they just donate the money it takes to pay for this INCREDIBLY expensive talent and make this show, directly to militant causes?” Rather than turning activism into a game and then giving away a fraction of the money we badly need in a “prize …?” People are dying. “
“I go to the activist reality show and I do that and everyone including the judges screaming and crying,” wrote one user, alongside a Kendall Jenner meme from her ill-fated Pepsi commercial.
Another user added, “1. Why the hell do they judge this 2. Why the hell is there a TV show that turns activist into competition when the whole * essence * of activism is solidarity and community. C is the absolute worst.
“This is really horrible, lol. A reality show about who can be the next Insta-activist? It’s performative at best, and makes the hard work of a lot of the grassroots a little light. [organizations] do in the field, on a daily basis. Raw,” said one.
“Ooooh, can’t wait to see the cat fights and activist versus activist shadow!” And the reunion spectacle? Someone is going to be served! one fan joked.
“The Activist” will premiere for five weeks on CBS starting Friday, October 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
