Twitter suspended Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., For 12 hours on Sunday, claiming she repeatedly violated the company’s disinformation policy.
“The referenced account has been temporarily locked for several violations of our civic integrity policyA Twitter spokesperson said.
Greene’s most recent posts included one making false claims about widespread electoral fraud in Georgia both in the November election and in the January 5 Senate run-off, as well as a series of tweets who repeated more debunked claims and called Georgia election officials “morons”.
Twitter restricted these posts from any promotion and slapped them with warning labels. Greene’s account has remained online, but she is unable to post.
After the riot on Capitol Hill this month, Twitter stepped up its crackdown on misleading and false information. Since the violence, Twitter has suspended tens of thousands of accounts linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory, in addition to indefinitely banning President Donald Trump.
Twitter’s civic integrity policy states that the company will “tag or remove false or misleading information intended to undermine public confidence in an election or other civic process.”
“This includes, but is not limited to: disputed allegations that could undermine confidence in the process itself, such as unverified information about election rigging, ballot tampering, vote counting or certification of election results, and misleading claims about civic process that calls for or could lead to interference in the implementation of process results, ”company policies state.
Greene, a first-year lawmaker who is a staunch supporter of Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, has previously expressed sympathy for QAnon, although she has since sought to distance herself. Greene, who has already pledged to try to impeach President-elect Joe Biden on his first day in office, has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans since the riot.
“She’s hi for Cocoa Puffs,” wrote Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., In an op-ed for The Atlantic, criticizing Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., For not disowning his campaign.
