FAIRBANKS, Ak (AP) – Alaska wildlife officials closed the fishery at two lakes near the North Pole after water tests revealed contamination.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the State Department of Game Fishing announced last week the closure of Kimberly Lake, northwest of North Pole High School and Polaris Lake on Eielson Air Force Base.

Officials said the ministry had also suspended the stocking of farmed fish in all the lakes of the base.

Officials said the chemical compound known as PFAS was found at levels above the levels recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency. The substance is found in the foam used to suppress oil fires.

Laura Achee, spokeswoman for the State Department for Environmental Protection, said that no other body of water containing fish contained high concentrations of this chemical.
