Veteran comedy showrunner David Richardson died today, Jan. 18, of heart failure. He celebrated his 65th birthday on Christmas Eve.
Richardson had recently completed the fifth and final upcoming season of Netflix’s adult animated series. F is for the family, of which he was executive producer.
A cancer survivor for almost 30 years, Richardson began his career as a television comedy writer in 1985 on the Michael Leeson / Carsey-Werner’s NBC series. Grandiose, with Pamela Red and Bonnie Hunt. He spent two seasons on the sitcom Empty nest before moving on to animation with a passage on The simpsons.
Richardson went on to work on numerous live television comedies. Within the staff of Witt-Thomas The John Larroquette Salon, he won a Humanitas award for his episode “Faith”. Richardson spent three seasons on Two and a half men and also wrote and produced for Malcolm in the middle, 8 simple rules, Phenom, Ed and And Joan, with Joan Cusack and Kyle Chandler, on which he was a showrunner.

During his career, Richardson developed and produced numerous pilots and created and produced Manhattan, AZ, which operated in the United States for two seasons.
Richardson returned to animation with Bill Burr and Michael Price F is for the family, which he joined early as a co-executive producer and was promoted to executive producer in Season 3.
“I first met David in 2000 when he was my boss And Joan, and I never forgot how awesome he was as a writer, show runner and friend, ”said Price, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of F is for the family. “When I had the chance to become a showrunner myself on F is for the family, he was the first person I called to add to the team. From day one of the show, he was my right hand – always throwing good jokes, mastering the story and just a great guy. His fingerprints are on every frame of our show, and his loss is immeasurable to me.
Richardson is survived by his wife, Charleen Easton Richardson; their 12-year-old twins, Arlo and Atticus; son Wayne, from a previous marriage; stepdaughter Kelsey; grandson Banks and granddaughter Harper; brother Jeff Richardson and sister Susan Benson; and several nieces and nephews, not to mention the many people whose lives he touched during his long career in entertainment.
The family is preparing a private ceremony. A public celebration of Richardson’s life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
