Divers and crews using underwater sonar searched Friday three missing persons on two lakes in Alabama after two boating accidents. The authorities then confirmed that one person had died, in addition to several injuries. Both occurred after dark on July 4th on large tanks that are popular destinations for people seeking a respite from the summer heat, according to the AP. Captain Gary Buchanan, spokesman for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's maritime patrol, said two 19-foot boats collided on Jordan Lake, north of Montgomery. He added that five others had been injured and two of them had been hospitalized for serious injuries. The missing were identified as Clay Jackson, 26, of Deatsville, and Tyler House, 17, of Marbury. The researchers stopped at dusk and Buchanan announced that they would resume searching for missing people on Saturday morning.

The crews also sought out a missing person on Friday after a boat accident in Smith Lake, north of Birmingham, said Buchanan. The agency later said Friday night in an e-mail statement that a 12-year-old girl had died and two other children injured: another 12-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. All came from Pontotoc County, Mississippi, he said. The statement did not immediately give details of what happened. Authorities say the accident involved a 19-foot deck-style boat. While the skies were clear, high temperatures were expected in the 1990s this week and Buchanan said the intense heat was worsening the conditions for the researchers, focused on recovering the corpses on the 7,000-acre Jordan Lake rather than on the search for survivors. "It works against us because of the stress on divers and their equipment, as well as the research teams in the sun and the heat," said Buchanan. (Read more stories from Alabama.)
