The two children found a .45 caliber handgun while they were alone in an apartment, Griffin police said. The shooting took place while the children had mishandled the weapon, authorities said.
The victim, aged 7, was taken to hospital where he was undergoing surgery, the police said.
Police Griffin, about 38 km south of Atlanta, did not say whether the two children were related.
Monday's shootout follows another shooting involving children in Georgia last week.
A 6-year-old girl died two days after her 4-year-old brother accidentally shot her in the head in Paulding County, about 40 km northwest of downtown Atlanta, according to the office Paulding County Sheriff.
