The New York Jets think the fourth time is a charm to find a permanent kicker. New York had a kicker test on Tuesday, Sam Ficken came out victorious. Ficken will kick off the Jets on Monday in the match against Cleveland Browns, the team's fourth scorer in a month.
Former Pro Bowl player Lawrence Tynes and former NFL player Jay Feely, who has played 14 seasons and is now a CBS broadcaster, have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Jets' situation. The Jets had a Pro Bowl kicker in Jason Myers who converted 91.7% of his attempts and 90.9% of his extra points last season. They decided to leave Myers and let him go free, creating this critical problem.
The Jets had a hard time finding a kicker in the post-Myers era. Surprisingly, Chandler Catanzaro retired from the NFL after a forgotten pre-season opener where he missed two more points in the Jets' preseason debut. The Jets then turned to Taylor Bertolet, who made two out of five attempts with the longest goal shot, 39 yards. He finished the preseason 5-on-8, scoring 2 of 4 when attempting additional points.
This forced the Jets to move on and sign Kaare Vedvik, who had trouble with the Minnesota Vikings after being acquired from the Baltimore Ravens in an exchange. Vedvik scored only 1 in 4 goals, missing his 37, 43 and 54 yards, before his liberation from Minnesota. His week with the Jets did not improve much.
Vedvik missed a 45-yard goal that held up well at the end of the second quarter in the Jerseys '17-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, which would have prolonged the Jets' loss to 9-0 at halftime. This happened after he hit the left post on an extra point attempt after returning C.J. Mosley's interception for a touchdown allowing the Jets to go up 6-0 in the first quarter. Vedvik has not converted an investment or an additional point in defeat.
If the Jets, who were part of the teams with the most headspace in the NFL early in the season, used some of that money to sign Myers … this problem could have been avoided.
