There were no credible allegations of voting issues impacting the election, as claimed by dozens of judges, governors, election officials, the Electoral College, the Ministry of Justice, of the Department of Homeland Security and the Supreme Court of the United States. But Trump is determined to say he hasn’t lost – which he has significantly done – and many GOP politicians either share his delusion or fear provoking his anger – even if that means voting to undermine democracy. .

A member of the House and a Senator are required to mount an objection when Congress counts the votes. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri on Wednesday said he would oppose the move, which will force House and Senate lawmakers to vote on whether to accept the results of Biden’s victory. Other senators – including the new ones – may still join the effort, which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has urged Republicans not to do.

Trump has lobbied Congress to try to overturn the election result, as his campaign’s attempts to overturn the election by the courts have been repeatedly rejected.

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse spoke out against the strategy – and the complicity of some of his GOP colleagues – in a Facebook post Wednesday night, urging Republicans to “reject” the effort to object to the certification process.

“The president and his allies are playing with fire,” he wrote. “They asked – first the courts, then the state legislatures, now Congress – to overturn the results of a presidential election. They have unsuccessfully called in judges and are now asking federal officials to strike down millions. and millions of votes. If you’re making big claims, you better have proof. But neither does the President and the institutional arsonists of Congress who will oppose the Electoral College vote. “

Among the more than a dozen members of the Republican House who have already publicly stated that they will vote against the electoral vote count next week are the representatives. Mo Brooks of Alabama, who is leading the effort, Jody Hice of Georgia, Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey and Joe Wilson of South Carolina.

That group includes eight Republican lawmakers from Pennsylvania, who announced their intentions in a joint statement earlier Thursday.

Several new members of the Republican House have also said they will oppose the certification process, including elected officials Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee.
