Two Indiana judges were shot dead Wednesday in the parking lot of a White Castle restaurant in Indianapolis after an argument with strangers, authorities said.

Judge Brad Jacobs, 46, was in critical condition and Judge Andrew Adams, 47, in a stable state in Indianapolis hospitals, according to Kathryn Dolan, spokeswoman for the Court Supreme of Indiana. Their specific wounds were not disclosed. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting.

Jacobs and Adams, along with two other people, frequented downtown streets after they had quarreled just before 3:30 pm in the fast food car park, police said at the Indianapolis Star.

Jurists stood in front of the White Castle when a car arrived and the people inside got out, police said. The words were exchanged and a fight broke out before shots were fired, the police said. The reason for the dispute was not clear.

Police initially stated that the dispute had begun in a strip club and had spread over the White Castle parking lot, but the authorities then retracted, claiming that the report was based on wrong information, according to USA Today.

The police did not disclose any information about any suspects. The detectives have found no evidence that the judges were targeted because of their position, said Genae Cook, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer.

Jacobs and Adams have been on court in Clark County since 2015. They were in town to attend the three-day Spring Judicial College conference, which began Wednesday, Cook told The Star.

Dolan said that Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush had visited both judges and their families Wednesday, according to the newspaper.

"Our judges across the state are sorry to learn this act of violence against our colleagues," said Dolan in a statement sent to the Star. "We are sending our prayers for a speedy recovery of Judges Jacobs and Adams, as well as our love and support to their families and the Clark County community."

Clark County is located in southern Indiana, just across the Ohio River and from Louisville, Kentucky.
