Two killed, including a police officer, in Louisiana shooting

A Louisiana man was arrested after two people were killed, including a police officer, and three others were injured in what authorities described Sunday as a “multiple parish shootings.”

Matthew Mire, 31, who was arrested on Saturday night after an all-day manhunt, faces charges of first degree murder of a police officer, attempted first degree murder of a police officer and other crimes, Louisiana State Police said in a statement. declaration.

Authorities identified the dead as Master Trooper Adam Gaubert, a 19-year-old State Police veteran, and Pamela Adair, 37.

“Private Gaubert embodied everything we stand for: honor, duty, selfless service and courage,” state police said.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, east of Baton Rouge, said in a statement that deputies were dispatched after midnight on Saturday to a mobile home park where Mire allegedly shot and killed two people.

A man and a woman inside a house told authorities they heard someone shoot a gun outside.

“They then saw someone barge in through their front door and fire shots,” the department said. “We don’t think this was a random shootout.”

The man was shot in the arm and the woman was shot in the arm and leg, the department said, adding they are expected to recover.

About four hours later, authorities in Ascension Parish, south of Baton Rouge, said in a statement that lawmakers responding to a report of a shooting found a man and woman who had been shot and killed. several times inside a house, including Adair.

Adair was pronounced dead in a hospital, the sheriff’s office said. The man was classified in critical condition.

Authorities in each parish identified Mire as a person of interest in the shootings, although details of the possible charges were not immediately disclosed.

Gaubert was sitting in his patrol car near the Ascension Parish house when Mire “ambushed” and shot him, state police said.

Later that morning, a shootout in a police chase broke out between Mire and another state soldier, the department said. The officer was not injured.

State Police said Mire was hospitalized with a K-9 bite and a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.

It was not clear Sunday night if Mire had a lawyer.
